End of class - BUS 110, Intro to Entrepreneurship

I’ve been asked to write a 300-word essay or “last lecture” to a student who is considering taking the entrepreneurial path.

I believe Heavenly Father has put within each one of us a desire to create something whether that is a family, a marriage, a business, art, food – you name it. We all have that desire to create something. For those of us taking this class, most of us have a desire to create a business in this season of our lives. The beautiful thing is, that even though we may not possess all the skills that are needed to be a business owner at this moment, we can change, we can learn and we can grow. The beauty of the Gospel is that an old dog CAN learn new tricks. The scriptures tell us that we can do ALL things through Christ. That weaknesses can become strengths. By small means are great things come to pass, and that we can learn line upon line, precept upon precept. We just have to believe in ourselves and that the Lord has put this desire in our hearts for a reason, and to trust in Him by asking Him to direct our paths.

If someone wants to start their own business, they need to be willing to learn and put in the effort. Long hours will be commonplace. Roadblocks will happen. Perseverance will be necessary in times of drudgery or disappointment. Mindset will be vital. A thick skin and a pick-yourself-up-off-the-ground-and-start-again attitude will be necessary. Leaving your comfort zone will be a place you go to often. Vision is a must. Partner with your Father in Heaven. Commit to finding something that will be a blessing to someone other than just yourself.

I would caution you to decide the things you will always do and the things you will never do long before you need to decide these things. When faced with difficult choices, if you make these decisions first, then you will know how to answer when asked a tough question.

I started this journal as a class project. I’m excited to keep it going and see where my entrepreneurial journey takes me in the weeks and months to come. I’m grateful to have had this record of the things I’ve learned and will learn in the future.
