Business Ethics and Honesty

Image
This week in my Intro to Entrepreneurship class, we’ve been studying about Business Ethics. Since I attend a Christ-centered university, there is a Gospel component to my studies which dovetails nicely with “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” I really enjoyed studying a talk from Lynn G. Robbins about “Making a Living and a Life.” This was a devotional given at BYU-Idaho in 2010. He talked about motivators, primary and secondary that tell you where you’re located on an A to F scale in your business. You DON’T want to dabble in the realm of the D and F-level companies. “Filthy lucre” is a biblical name for “ill-gotten gains” or dirty money. Think Judas Iscariot and his 30 pieces of silver. The scale looks like this:   I realized upon studying this grid, I’ve probably up to now, never been more than a B-Level Employee. I realize as a budding entrepreneur, that God expects me to work towards becoming an A-Level business owner. Another thing we ...

Childhood Dreams - Can They Come True?

This week we studied “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch in BUS 110. I’ve been assigned to journal on a few of the insights I received from this talk. Randy Pausch was a college professor and virtual reality expert that gave a lecture on realizing his childhood dreams. What was different about this particular lecture, was that Randy, a young husband and father in his late 40s, was dying of terminal pancreatic cancer. Joyful because he explained how he was able to realize his childhood dreams, not all exactly in the way he imagined as a child, but in some form or another. There were many factors that helped him to accomplish this. One that stood out to me was encouraging parents. Parents that recognized his potential and gave him freedom to explore. His parents also taught him the value of going to work and not complaining. Randy learned that complaining is a waste of time and energy. I...

My Intro to This Blog

Image
Hello, I'm Susie and this blog is my introduction to a business startup. It's also an assignment for a business class - BUS 110, AKA Intro to Entrepreneurship through Brigham Young University - Idaho. I'm a non-traditional student taking my sweet time at earning my bachelors degree, and also taking an 8-week course through the Kauffman Foundation called FastTrac that is with other small businesspeople in my city. I hope to document the things I'm learning about being a business owner, obviously with an emphasis on solopreneurship, since I will be wearing all the hats for myself for now. After 30-plus years of supporting executives in a corporate administrative professional role, I'm decided to go solo and become a Virtual Assistant. My administrative expertise, combined with a recent certificate in Social Media Marketing from Brigham Young University encourages me that "I can do this." I have the competency and willingness to learn. I am enthusiastic about...
